Linear Roller Bearings Boost Load Capacity 20x

Posted by: Willie Costa on Jan. 18, 2010

The Thomson RoundWay series of linear roller bearing packs extreme load-carrying capability into a very small package.  These unique bearings are designed for high-intensity linear applications, and range in size and capacity from the tiny 3” x 1.25” RW8-S – which can carry up to 970lbs – all the way up to the RW64-V, which can carry a dynamic load of 70,000lbf (310,800N).  This over 20 times the load capacity of conventional linear bearings.  These are also designed to operate in very high-speed, extreme-temperature environments, with travel speeds of up to 100 feet per second (31m/s) in ambient temperatures of up to 500° F (260° C).  RoundWay applications also benefit from what Thomson calls the “RoundRail Advantage” – a round shaft that allows the bearing to rotate, which eliminates the possibility of torsional stress even when the rail surface is less than ideal.

RoundWay bearings are designed to operate on Thomson 60 Case LinearRace shafting, which is available from 0.5 to 4 inches.  The concave rollers on the RoundWay bearings are able to handle high loads with a 10 million inch L10-rated travel life.  RoundWay bearings feature a lateral self-alignment feature that allows the bearings to be out of alignment by as much as 0.1875”, making them suitable for gantry applications, and other situations where 0.001” parallelism tolerances are otherwise required over long rail lengths.  An integrated trunion pin enables pitch alignment for height adjustments of up to 0.030”, which is ideal for applications with inaccurate mounting surfaces and which require minimum deflection.

Additionally, these bearings are suitable for use in severely contaminated applications – such as metal scrap removal, paper and wood processing, and granite quarrying – and other applications where chips and abrasive dust would be normally destructive.  A recirculating ground roller assembly spans shaft gaps for faster and more efficient pallet changing in packaging systems while maintaining a 0.005 coefficient of friction.  The end result is an efficient, high-capacity linear system capable of precise motion with operation that is smoother and quieter than other alternatives.
